Spring Field Day in Limestone Land

On April 27 in Camden East, the Ontario Woodlot Association, Limestone Chapter, will herald the coming of spring with a walk in the woods and a talk on invasive species control. Please register in advance.

“Dog-strangling vine: understanding its invasiveness and controlling its spread” is about the research into biological controls for this sweeping invasive weed.

Dr. Naomi Cappuccino is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University. She also works with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada’s - Central Experimental Farm, on the biological control of invasive weeds using plant-feeding insects. Dog-strangling vine, an Eastern European vine is sweeping across Canada, strangling plants and surviving the winters. Learn how these bio-controls can help disentangle and free up our landscape.

Lunch will be provided by a local caterer. After lunch, join a field trip nearby to discover the diversity found in this area - alvar, woodlands, and wetlands - that provides habitat to many varied species. The owner of the 125-acre property has managed it for 45 years for mixed land use, including some agriculture. He and a few local foresters will lead the group on a tour, pointing out features and explaining his creative solutions. Learn more about bird habitat, and view the progress of a Ducks Unlimited wetland enhancement project.

Join us on Saturday, April 27 from 9am to 3pm at Shirley Memorial Hall (beside St. Luke's Anglican Church), 2595 County Road 4, in Camden East. The event is free for OWA members, and a $10 lunch fee is requested from non-members.

For registration and information, contact Dave at owalimestone@gmail.com or 613-373-9334.
