Bell Rock Hall - Repair Cafe

Jun
23

Date: Jun 23, 2019 - Jun 23, 2019

Location: 6034 Leveque Rd, RR 1 Verona, Ontario

Category: Community Events

REPAIR CAFÉ is coming to Frontenac. We are hosting a Repair Café clinic in BellRock Hall on June 23.

Repair Café is a volunteer-run program in which people bring in belongings that need fixing and other people fix them for them. Volunteers consist of people who like to (and can) fix things. Cafes regularly hold ‘workshops’ on everything from fixing chairs to darning socks. About the only no go is anything with gasoline engines.

The re-use aspect of the Repair Cafe is a big benefit. You can get your stuff fixed, and you’re keeping things out of landfills.

It’s free, though we’ll accept a free-will offering which will be split between BellRock Hall and Repair Café organisation. We also hope to get a lot of kids to the workshops. This would be good because we’re losing older fixers and this is a way to pass skills on to kids.

See attached posters for more details. We are also actively recruiting volunteers who have a skill they could share at this event.

27

Date: Jun 27, 2019 - Jun 27, 2019

Location: Sydenham Branch Library, 4412 Wheatley Street, Sydenham ON K0H 2T0

Category: Community Events

Every week we hear about a new form of fraud, usually spread by phone or email: ransomware, extortion, phony Canada Revenue Agency or bank calls, and more. Nearly 80% of mass marketing fraud is conducted by organized crime groups, and it's currently the second most common criminal activity funding terrorist activities. However, most mass marketing fraud is never reported. Often the victims are too embarrassed to admit their losses. But silence can allow the fraud to continue. For the second June installment of the KFPL Live monthly speakers’ series we are delighted to offer a presentation on Fraud Awareness by Tom Cheel from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). Jointly managed by the RCMP, Competition Bureau, and the OPP, the CAFC is the central agency in Canada which collects information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (eg telemarketing), advance fee fraud (eg West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints. In his presentation Tom will outline the most common types of fraud and how you can protect yourself. This information will be of particular use to seniors. This presentation will take place twice: first at the Isabel Turner branch on Wednesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. and then at the Sydenham branch on Thursday, June 27 at 2 p.m. Both sessions will be the same and both are open to adults and teens. There is no admission charge, but seating is limited. To avoid disappointment, please register in advance at calendar.kfpl.ca/events or by phone at (613) 549-8888 beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 15.
