Hunting Opportunities in South Frontenac

An outdoor enthusiasts dream, South Frontenac is home to many large and small game species that are permitted for hunting at various times of the year. White tail deer, migratory birds, wild turkey, and a variety of small game provide plenty of opportunity for field-to-table experiences.

Hunting Regulations

Hunting is provincially regulated and any questions concerning hunting should be directed to the Ministry of Natural Resources. 

The Ministry of Natural Resources guidelines should be reviewed to ensure you fully understand the rules governing hunting in Ontario.

Sunday Gun Hunting

South Frontenac Council passed a motion in September 2010 to allow Sunday gun hunting. The Ministry of Natural Resources (the arm of the Ontario Government which regulates hunting) then issued the notice indicating that Sunday hunting is permitted.

Firearm By-Law

The only by-law that restricts the use of firearms within the township (the village of Sydenham) is By-law 2001-04. If you have a concern about misuse of firearms and your safety that constitutes an emergency, contact the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police by dialling 9-1-1.

Hunting Basics

To hunt in Ontario, you must:

  1. Be at least 16 years old (or 15 with written parental consent);
  2. Take the Ontario Hunter Education Course (or have recognized hunter credentials);
  3. Take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (to use a gun to hunt);
  4. Get a hunting version Outdoors Card;
  5. Get all required tags and seals for the game you wish to hunt.

You must carry both the hunting version Outdoors Card and licence tag whenever you hunt and follow all hunting rules in Ontario Hunting Regulation Summary. Review the Summary regularly as requirements change frequently. 

What3Words

Consider downloading the new What3Words application to your smart phone. What3Words divided the world into three meter squares and gave each square a unique combination of three words. In case of an emergency, you can tell the 911 operator the three words that is shown on the app. for an exact location. This is especially useful in case of an emergency in rural and remote areas often travelled to for hunting.
