Commemorative Amenity and Tree Planting Program

South Frontenac Township invites individuals, organizations, or service clubs to leave a legacy by installing an amenity such as a bench, table, or other structure or planting a tree at a park, greenspace, or cemetery in South Frontenac. The gift may honour a loved one, an experience, an organization, or to recognize an important event or milestone.

Program Information and Fees

Here are the program details. For more information, read the full policy included in the By-law and application, linked below.

  • Council approved the by-law to establish a commemorative bench and tree policy on September 20th, 2022.
  • The Township will use a standard plaque with a standard font and colour that adheres to accessibility requirements for consistency in cost, size, type, and mounting.
  • The Township has final approval of the text on the plaque and reserves the right to make edits or corrections for grammar, spelling, or readability or reject text if we deem it offensive.
  • You can identify up to three locations where you would like the tree planted or amenity installed. If we can't plant the tree or install the amenity in your preferred location, we'll work with you to choose a suitable location.
  • The Township will complete the installation of the amenity and/ or plant the tree. Due to risk and liability and to achieve the required service standards, any in-kind, volunteer, or do-it-yourself work is not permitted.

  • Amenity installation will take place throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons on a day that is favourable for concrete pouring or any other considerations for successful installation.
  • Tree planting will be scheduled in either May for the spring planting season or September for the fall planting season.
  • The Township understands that the amenity or tree may have sentimental value; however, it is not to be considered a memorial or shrine. For that reason, the Township will not permit the placement of flowers, wreaths, pictures, etc. at the site or the addition of fixtures to or around the amenity/ tree.
Fees

The fees are based on cost recovery only. The Township will not profit from the installation of the commemorative amenity or tree. The Township recognizes and appreciates the added value to public spaces these contributions provide.

Fees cover the costs of the materials and are subject to change:

  • Bench/ table: $1,500
  • Tree: $500
  • Other park furnishing/ structure: Please contact staff

Stories will rotate monthly to give families an opportunity to frequently enjoy a new book. The first book for the StoryWalk is “It’s a Mitig” by Bridget George, an Anishinaabe author.

The main focus of the StoryWalk content will be on local nature, and whenever possible, local curators, authors, and illustrators will be featured. Content will be sourced out regionally, provincially, or nationally. The closer to home, the better.
