For Immediate Release

Over the past week, the Kingston Frontenac Lennox & Addington Region has experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 within the City of Kingston. As of 1:00pm this afternoon, there were over 16 active cases associated with this outbreak and hundreds of additional people seeking testing.

As a result of these new cases, KFL&A Public Health has issued an emergency order under Section 22 of the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act, requiring that all patrons and employees within commercial settings to wear a mask. According to the media release issued today, this order comes into effect as of Saturday, June 27 at 12:01 am.

In addition to this new order, the Township offices on George St. and Keeley Rd will be closed to the public on Monday June 29th and 30th, and will reopen on July 2nd, 2020. This time will be used to implement additional safety measures in our facilities. Staff will continue to respond to inquiries via phone and email.

Effective July 2, 2020 at 8:00 am when the offices reopen, all individuals entering municipal facilities, including Township Staff working out of those locations, will be required to wear masks while in public spaces of the work place.

The following additional steps will be taken to ensure our staff and facilities are prepared for this change and that we all remain safe:

  • Patrons will be required to wear a mask when entering the building. Should a patron enter our facilities without a mask, they will be asked to leave. The Township is not able to provide masks to members of the public.
  • Suitable masks can be of the medical or non-medical variety including bandanas, scarves or other cloth/homemade masks as per the KFL&A Public Health emergency order.
  • A daily screening of staff will continue until further notice. Screening consists of a short verbal questionnaire conducted each morning, similar to the provincial screening online.
  • High traffic office spaces that are open to the public will continue to be sanitized with a special Clorox 360 disinfectant fogging system on a regular schedule.
  • Additional janitorial cleaning in each of our offices will continue until further notice, as well as assigned daily cleaning in each department.

The Township will continue to consult with KFL&A Public Health and will implement their recommendations in order to keep our employees and patrons safe. This recent outbreak has reminded us that we must stay vigilante and continue to work together to combat community transmission and the spread of COVID-19.

Remember to stay local, shop local, and monitor the health of yourself and your family for signs and symptoms.
