Following a two-year hiatus, the Township is hoping to come back strong in 2022 by offering a full complement of summer swim and day camp programming. Unfortunately, many organizations, including South Frontenac, are experiencing recruitment challenges in relation to hiring certified swim instructors.
“The Township has a long history of offering quality summer Swim and Day Camp options for youth in South Frontenac - these programs have become a summer staple for many families in the community,” said Mayor Ron Vandewal. “Our instructors play a vital role in the success of the program, as without their training and certifications, we would not be able to provide swimming lessons or water-based activities at our camps,” added Vandewal.
For this reason, South Frontenac has extended the typical summer student application deadline, as well as taken additional measures in the hopes of attracting applicants. These changes include:
- The application to apply has been extended to April 13, 2022, or until all positions are filled (whichever comes first). There are currently eight (8) open swim instructor positions.
- The ‘returning student’ requirement has been waived for the 2022 season. This means that graduates and those who are not returning to formal education in September are welcome to apply.
- South Frontenac is offering a financial bursary for swim instructor (re)certification training fees. Fees will be reimbursed in two parts: 50% will be reimbursed upon signing the employment contract with South Frontenac, and the other 50% will be reimbursed at the end of the contract.
“Unfortunately, many municipalities are facing staffing shortages as a result of not being able to offer summer programming over the past few years,” said Recreation and Arena Manager Tim Laprade. “Many students have either moved on or require re-certification for positions such as Swim Instructors. We hope that by removing the ‘returning student’ requirement and offering a bursary for (re)certification training fees, we will be able to attract staff back to this program,” added Laprade.
