Nominations

Changes to the Municipal Election Act include changes to the nomination period. For the 2018 Municipal Election the nomination period is from May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018. Nominations can be filed during regular business hours (8:00 am to 4:30 pm) from May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018. On Nomination Day (July 27), nominations can be filed between 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Filing of Nominations

A person may be nominated for an office by filing a nomination in the Clerk's Office, in person or by an agent. Effective April 1, 2018, the nomination of a person for an office on Council, must be endorsed by at least 25 persons, and they may endorse more than one nomination with one exception. The endorsement requirement does not apply to a nomination in a municipality in which the number of electors who were eligible to vote in the 2014 election is less than the prescribed number.

The person endorsing a nomination must be eligible to vote in an election for an office within the municipality, if a regular election was held on the day that the person endorses the nomination.

The Clerk is entitled to rely upon the information filed by the candidate and a nomination certified by the Clerk is conclusive evidence that all conditions have been complied with. In other words, the Clerk does not have to verify the electors are qualified.
