Precautionary Power Related Tips:

  1. If you see a downed power line or tree branch that has fallen on a power line, always assume it's energized and dangerous. Stay away  and call 1-800-434-1235 24 hours  a day, everyday.
  2. Turn of all appliances that will turn on automatically when power is restored.
  3. Keep a phone that does not require electricity. Cordless phones require electricity and may not work in a power outage.
  4. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to prevent food spoilage.  For tips on safe food storage, click here.
  5. Use caution when using open flames. Do not use a barbeque, camp stove or generator indoors.
  6. Avoid elevators until the power has been stabilized.
  7. Power outages mean that a number of traffic signals may not be working and travellers are reminded to treat the affected intersections as though they are four-way stops and yield to traffic on the right.
  8. In the winter, during a prolonged power outage, prevent your pipes from freezing or busting by draining them and shutting off the main water supply.
