Brass Point Bridge Rehabilitation Update
From: Parks Canada
Parks Canada will begin the full replacement of Brass Point Bridge in Seeley’s Bay in summer 2026, with reopening expected in early 2028. This project will replace both the historic swing and fixed bridges, upgrade roadway infrastructure, and ensure the long-term safety and functionality of this key crossing on the Rideau Canal National Historic Site.
Parks Canada recognizes the significant impact of this temporary closure for residents, businesses, and travellers. We are working closely with the contractor to carefully coordinate timelines and minimize the length of the closure.
A public information session will be held in advance of the full bridge closure to share more specific details on project timelines, construction plans and detour routes. Details for this information session will be shared in the coming weeks. To help the community plan, the project will follow this sequence:
Phase 1: Preliminary Work (Spring 2026 – Bridge remains open to vehicular traffic)
Preliminary work will focus on site preparation activities to support the main construction phase. During this phase, the bridge will be open to vehicular traffic.
Phase 2: Main Construction and Closure (Summer 2026 – Early 2028 – Bridge closed to all vehicular traffic) The replacement of the bridge structures is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, requiring a full closure to all vehicular traffic. A vehicle detour route will be provided. Navigation for watercraft will not be interrupted.
Closure dates will be confirmed once delivery timelines for key project materials, including timber and mechanical components, are finalized. The bridge will close only after these materials are secured and the contractor is fully prepared to proceed, helping to keep the closure period as short as possible. Parks Canada is also coordinating with local service providers, including emergency services, to ensure continuity of service during construction.
Phase 3: Project Completion (Late 2028 – Short-term closure required)
Final finishing work, including painting of the timber swing bridge, is scheduled for late 2028. This work will require a short-term closure of approximately three weeks to complete the project.
Community Updates and Engagement

Parks Canada recognizes the significant impact this closure and the resulting detour will have on the daily lives of community members, and we appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we undertake this critical work.
