Meeting with Minister of Transport Concerning Alto

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Mayor Vandewal and Mayor Paterson from the City of Kingston - Municipal Government met with Hon. Steve MacKinnon, Minister of Transport of Canada, and MP Mark Gerretsen to discuss the Alto High-Speed Rail project and potential for a Kingston stop.

Mayor Vandewal stressed that a route through South Frontenac would have severe impacts to our community, rural character as well as environmental impacts, and that a route further south supports a stop in Kingston through the regional economic hub. We are hopeful that this meeting leads to further positive discussions and outcomes.
