Snow Social 2024

January 20, 2024, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, Sydenham Village

Join us for the second Snow Social! This event will be a celebration of the winter season and will feature activities at The Point Park and throughout the village of Sydenham, just 20 minutes north of Kingston. Admission is free however donations will be gratefully accepted. This is an all-weather event. Visitors should dress like a well-prepared Canadian and plan to take part in all sorts of winter fun including snow tubing (conditions permitting) and firepits. We will have a vendor’s market, lots of live music, activities at the Library Community Room, and SNOW much more!

Getting to Sydenham, Event Parking, & Event Locations

Sydenham is a short drive north of Kingston. Take Sydenham Road north, then turn left on to Rutledge Road and follow the event signage.

There is lots of free event parking at Sydenham High School and Loughborough Public School. Accessible event parking is available at The Point Park.

  • 11:00 am - 3:00 pm: Wagon Ride Stop - Whites Rides will be joining us once again with horse drawn wagon rides around the village.  
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Elements Fitness & Wellness Obstacle Course - You're favourite family obstacle course will be back at the Snow Social! Get your game face on and say hi to Karley, Tanya, and the whole gang!
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Kids Games with the Not So Amateur Amateur's - You won't want to miss the family game station. They'll have inflatable games and classic yard games.
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Snowshoes and Kicksleds - Give these classic winter activities a try! Conditions permitting. P.S. Did you know the equipment can be rented for your own adventures at home or on our trails?! Contact the Frontenac Community Arena for more details.
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Kingston Forest & Nature School Activity Station - Kingston Forest & Nature School (KFNS) is dedicated to outdoor, nature-based, child-led learning and is located just south of Harrowsmith, Ontario. You will find us engaging in free play, nature exploration, story time, snack time, mess-making, crafting, tool use, and plenty of age-appropriate risk-taking and confidence-building! At this year's Snow Social, you'll find us ready to answer all of your questions about our programs & events, and we will be accompanied by an inviting spread of guided & self-directed nature-based activities such as scavenger hunts, shelter building, knot tying, fire laying, a cozy book nook, and more!

  • 11:00 am - 12:00 pm: Indigenous Teachings Around the Fire with Greg Loft.
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Fire Pits & S’Mores with the Storrington Lion’s Club.
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: The South Frontenac Stocksport Club for a game of Laddleshiessen! This fun hit-the-target game is so much fun and a great way to get to know the incredible game of Stocksport. Stop by and say hello to our internationally ranked Stocksport team!

The Big Hill at Loughborough Public School
  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Check out snow tubing at the big hill! Helmets are strongly recommended and adult supervision is required. Conditions permitting.
The Boat Launch

All on-ice activity is cancelled and not permitted due to unsafe ice conditions! 

  • 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm: South Frontenac Fire & Rescue – The crew will be on-hand with ice-rescue gear promoting winter safety. Check out the inflatable rescue boat, ice water suits, ice hooks, and talk to the team about how to stay safe in the winter season.

  • 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm: Frontenac Fury Scrimmage and Skills – Join our very own Frontenac Fury Girls Hockey Association for a fun scrimmage road-hockey game. The team will put on a skills and drills clinic after the game for those looking to improve their good ol’ hockey game.

Live Music in the Big Tent
  • 11:00 am - 12:30 pm: Bon Evans - Bon Evans is a Kingston-based singer/songwriter who performs songs that are often compared to Jack Johnson, Cat Stevens, and Bob Seger. “He writes about good times and making sense of the struggles and joys we all face in life”. Touring across Canada since 2018, his outgoing and affable personality connects with audiences while his heartfelt stories and songs leave people wanting more. www.bonevans.com

  • 12:45 pm - 2:15 pm: Andrew Vanhorn from The Celtic Kitchen Party - Andrew Vanhorn presently is lead singer and guitarist for The Celtic Kitchen Party (https://celtickitchenparty.com/) who play a mix of Celtic infused originals, traditional and contemporary East Coast, Irish and Scottish - and the right dash of Pop and Classic Rock! All of the lads' energy and experience has culminated in a three-album collection available in CD and DIGITAL platforms. These albums continue to be seated somewhere between original upbeat party tunes and beautiful storytelling to creative re-imaginings of traditional favourites. With Toronto’s Folk/Rock indie darlings Vile Richard (https://vilerichard.com/) Andrew has toured throughout Ontario and the East Coast promoting their Hockey Song. He has also gained some commercial success as an actor (Molson's Beer Commercial/Radio) and is a proud member of SOCAN.

  • 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm: Chris Murphy & Jess Wedden - Singer/songwriter Chris Murphy and fiddler Jess Wedden are two of the busiest musicians in Frontenac County. In addition to their solo endeavours, they play together in the Celtic/Folk group Turpin’s Trail, as well as alongside three-time Juno Award winner David Francey as his band accompaniment.   • 11:00 am leaving from the library front door: Winter Birds of South Frontenac Walk with Gaye - Meet Gaye at the KF Public Library front doors for a guided bird walk around the village. This one-hour walk will focus on locating and identifying bird species that stay in South Frontenac during the winter. No bird knowledge is necessary. Dress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them.

  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm in the Community Room: Face Painting with the Not so Amateur Amateur's

  • 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm in the Community Room: Yo-Yo Dave will be joining us for a very special comedy, juggling, and magic show. You won't want to miss this entertainment!

  • 12:30 - 1:15 pm, and 1:45 pm - 4:00 pm in the Community Room: Yo-Yo Dave will be sculpting up some terrific balloon artistry for young and old alike! 
  • 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm in the Library: Stories For All Ages - A winter warm up with Kingston Frontenac Public Library! Join them for winter-themed interactive stories at the library kids corner.

Cataraqui Trailhead at Sydenham Foodland - 4476 George Street
  • 11:00 am leaving from the Cataraqui Trailhead at Sydenham Foodland – More than an ordinary winter walk, Stana from Cataraqui Conservation will guide an hour-long tracks, scats, and signs adventure along the picturesque Cataraqui Trail. Be sure to dress for the weather, wear sturdy boots, and get ready to unravel clues from nature to discover local winter-loving species. You’ll find Stana near the front entrance of the Foodland. She will be the person standing with the taxidermied Great horned owl!

  • 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Warm up with free hot chocolate and hot apple cider hosted by the Albion No. 109 Masonic Lodge! There will be kids crafts and table-top games to play while you enjoy live, local music.
  • 11:00 am - 12:30 pm: Evan Jackson - Alt-folk aficionado Evan Jackson is a singer/songwriter born and based in Kingston, Ontario. From a young age, he soaked up the words and sounds of the artists he loved, and began to develop his own country-noir style. At home on the stage, Evan weaves stories that are dark and magnetic. With the release of his first EP, “True Gentleman” Evan showcases his songwriting abilities and versatility as an artist with a range of Canadiana material.
  • 12:45 pm - 2:15 pm: Whiskey Smoke - Whiskey Smoke features Amanda Sorensen and Mike Grice singing country hits from the past to the present.   • 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm: Towwns - Towwns is the project of Simon Beach, a songwriter and musician currently based in Ottawa, Ontario. From guitar-based instrumentals to electronic elements, Simon has recently begun writing and recording acoustic driven songs in the style of contemporary folk artists like Gregory Alan Isakov and Fionn Regan.
