KFL&A Public health has now confirmed that avian flu has been found in dead waterfowl in Kingston. There are no confirmed cases of avian flu in South Frontenac at this time.

If you see or come across a sick or dead bird

Do not handle sick, injured, or dead wild birds. Keep pets away. Report sick or dead birds (including waterfowl) to the Ontario Regional Centre of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 866-673-4781 or complete the online reporting tool on the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative website.

If you find a dead bird on your property and have to dispose of it, double bag the bird and dispose of it in your garbage or bury the carcass one metre deep. The Township will not collect or dispose of birds on private property. If handling wild birds or other wildlife is unavoidable, wear gloves and avoid contact with blood, body fluids and feces. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or use hand sanitizer.

Backyard flocks and pet birds

If you are a farmer or have chickens, ducks or other birds and are concerned about protecting your flock, follow the guidelines provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affair's Biosecurity Recommendations for Small Flock Poultry Owners and Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) How to prevent and detect disease in backyard flocks and pet birds.

If you suspect that your birds could have avian influenza, please contact your veterinarian or the CFIA by calling 226-217-8022 or by email.

Protecting pets

  • When outdoors ensure they stay away from sick or dead birds.
  • Keep your cats indoors and dogs on a leash when out for a walk.
  • Do not feed pets any raw meat from wild birds or poultry.
  • Consult with your veterinarian if your pet is sick or for more information on avian influenza in pets, and visit the Government of Canada website for more information on protecting your pets.

Avian influenza is not generally thought to be a threat to humans.
