For Immediate Release

It is our goal to keep the residents up to date on all changes and information related to municipal service delivery and enhanced precautions that have been put in place to help protect the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Garbage & Recycling Reminder - May Long Weekend

Due to the Victoria Day long weekend, regularly scheduled garbage collection for Monday, May 18th will be picked up on Tuesday, May 19th, 2020. There will be no changes to the rest of the week and there are NO changes to recycling collection.

As a reminder, the Portland, Loughborough, and Hazardous waste disposal sites are now open on their regularly scheduled days; however, the Loughborough waste disposal site will be closed on Monday May 18th, 2020 due to the holiday. The Portland Waste disposal site continues to accept brush and yard debris free of charge. Brush should be no bigger than 6” in diameter and leaves must be debagged. For more information on the Township’s waste disposal sites including directions, please visit our website at https://www.southfrontenac.net/en/living-here/landfill-locations-and-times.aspx.

Local Fire Ban Lifted

Effective May 6th, 2020, the total burning ban was lifted in the Township of South Frontenac. This means that residents can return to having open air fires including open air cooking fires, camping fires, and approved incinerator or brush pile fires that are in compliance with the regulations set in the Township’s burning Bylaw 2012-68.

Although the Township’s local fire ban has been lifted, a provincial fire ban enacted by the Ministry of Nature Resources & Forestry (MNRF) is still in place in the Bedford District of the Township and all of Frontenac Provincial Park. The Township has no discretion over, nor can it enforce the Provincial ban.

The Township is reminding residents that with the lifting of the burn ban, there will be no additional brush drop-off days at the Township owned Quarry on Quarry Rd. We remind residents that they may be subject to fines for any illegal dumping at the site.

As an alternative, the recently reopened Portland waste disposal site permits brush and yard waste disposal. This site is open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Building and Planning Applications

In accordance with Provincial Regulations made under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, since Saturday April 4, 2020 at 11:59 pm, the Township of South Frontenac has only been able to inspect new construction projects if they have been deemed essential by the Provincial Essential Services Order.

Inspections have continued where permits were issued on or before April 4, 2020 for:

  • Construction of single family, semi-detached, townhomes, condominiums, mixed use and other buildings, and
  • Renovations and alterations to residential properties where construction work started before April 4, 2020.

While inspections will continue, Building Inspectors will be following a new inspection protocol due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes include:

  • Building Inspectors will not enter occupied buildings for inspections
  • Inspectors will not engage in interpersonal contact at sites
  • Prior to attending sites, staff will inquire if any persons on the site or related to the site are exhibiting symptoms associated with COVID-19, have been exposed to a probable case of the virus, or are in self-isolation

Any construction work that takes place without a permit or without inspection by Building Department staff will be subject to a potential Order under the Building Code Act.

The Township of South Frontenac Building Department appreciates your understanding and cooperation during these challenging times and will remain available to respond to inquiries and assist in the processing of applications via phone and email while our offices continue to be closed to the public.

Cemetery Gatherings for Mother’s Day

If you are planning to visit a cemetery on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, please remember that Provincial restrictions during COVID-19 mean that only five (5) people are permitted to gather together. Additionally, those gathering together must also practice physical distancing by keeping at least two metres (six feet) apart.
