Museum

The South Frontenac Museum has been working towards an opening plan to ensure that visitors get an experience that is both safe and enriching during this phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting July 29th, 2020 the Museum, located at 5595 Highway 38 in Hartington, will be open from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and starting August 8th, the Museum will also be open every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. all until September 5th, 2020.

After extensive conversations between the Museum Executive Board, Docents (volunteer guides), and the Township, the doors are ready to reopen once again with new safety protocols in place. These protocols include frequent hand sanitizing, making masks mandatory for all, and filling out a contact form to make contact tracing easier should it need to take place.

The Museum has welcomed the public to explore the history of South Frontenac since 2015 when it opened its doors at the Hartington School House. A group of dedicated volunteers work to set up exhibits, facilitate open hours and tours, and undertake acquisition, cataloging and research of artifacts.

This summer’s exhibits include ‘Focus on South Frontenac’ which highlights the area’s historic industries including mining, lumbering, cheese factories, and the railroads. For the kids, the ‘Childhood: School, Work & Play’ exhibit offers a look into past rural experiences for children. As well, the ‘Times of War’ exhibit extensively highlights the 146 Battalion in WWI.

“What a terrific opportunity for people to get out and discover their own back yard,” says John McDougall, President of the South Frontenac Museum Society. “We are excited to welcome people into the Museum this summer. Our exhibits are wide-ranging; there is sure to be something to pique everyone’s interest.”

The Society is looking forward to once again offering a glimpse into some of South Frontenac’s history. Despite the late start into the season due to COVID-19, visitors are encouraged to explore our community.
