Following a two-year hiatus, the Township is thrilled to announce the return of Canada Day programing across the community. Residents will have the opportunity to take part in celebratory events at a variety of locations across South Frontenac.

“Cancelling these celebrations the past two years was not a decision that was made lightly by the organizing committees, but it was the right choice at the time in order to keep residents safe and healthy,” said Mayor Ron Vandewal. “With the lifting of restrictions and a dedicated group of volunteer residents, Canada Day activities have been scheduled to take place in Godfrey (Glendower), Harrowsmith, Sunbury, and Sydenham.”

While the event locations remain the same, the activities at each may have changed in comparison to prior years. As with any community event, access to volunteers plays a significant role in the number and type of events that are offered. A new addition to South Frontenac Canada Day events will include the reading of a Land Acknowledgement at the opening ceremonies for each location in recognition of the traditional unceded territory that South Frontenac lands are within. For a listing of activities by location, please see below or visit www.southfrontenac.net/canadaday.

All three (3) firework shows taking place were partially funded through the Celebrate Canada Program (Department of Canadian Heritage). Residents are reminded that pets often do not enjoy fireworks shows as much as their humans. As such, please ensure furry friends are kept inside or tied up securely during the fireworks to prevent runaway animals.

To accommodate various events happening across the Township, some temporary road closures will need to occur. Battersea Rd and Sunbury Rd will be closed between 3910 Battersea Rd to the Sunbury Rd intersection, and on Sunbury Rd from the intersection to the entrance of Gerald Ball Memorial Park from approximately 12:50 pm – 1:30 pm for the Sunbury Canada Day parade. In Sydenham, the Cataraqui Trail will be closed between the George St. and Clearwater Rd trailheads from 12:00 pm to 11:59 pm on July 1st. This is required to ensure public safety for the Sydenham Canada Day fireworks display - alternate routes will be posted on the trailhead gates.

Additionally, residents are reminded to take precautions and drive slowly when navigating these areas, as traffic may be busy due the various events happening across the Township. Anyone feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms is asked to remain at home, while attendees are encouraged to practice physical distancing and hand sanitizing while enjoying the events. Remember these events can be quite busy, so evaluate your own tolerance for risk and plan accordingly.

“On behalf of Council, Staff, and your fellow South Frontenac residents, I want to thank the organizing committees, community groups, and numerous volunteers that make these events possible - it’s the hard work and dedication of these individuals that make our community a great place to live and play,” explained Mayor Vandewal. “If you attend one of these events, make sure to thank a volunteer for bringing back Canada Day celebrations to South Frontenac!”
